Copperas is a local-first desktop writing application operated by Copperas LLC, 551 Veechdale Rd, Simpsonville, KY 40067, United States. This policy explains how the Copperas app and our cloud service handle your data. Questions: privacy@copperas.io.
This policy covers the Copperas desktop app and the cloud features it connects to. How the copperas.io website handles visitors is described separately in our Website Privacy Notice.
Your manuscript is a plain file on your own computer. Writing, editing, version history, and import/export all work offline, with no account. Data leaves your device only when you use an account and the AI features that require our cloud service. If you use Copperas in local mode, we receive nothing about your writing.
Account information. When you create an account: your email address (for authentication and account recovery) and a password (stored only as a secure hash by our identity provider). We use this to operate your account.
Payment information. Subscriptions and credit top-offs are processed by our payment processor (Stripe). We do not receive or store full card numbers; we retain a billing record (plan, amount, status) to operate your subscription.
Content you send to AI features. When you use AI features, the following is transmitted to our cloud service for processing:
We do not use your manuscript or other content to train AI models.
Cloud Backup (optional, off by default). If you enable Cloud Backup, an encrypted copy of your manuscript is stored so you can restore it on another device or after data loss. You can turn it off at any time; the stored copy is removed when you delete your account.

To keep Copperas stable, the app records technical details when something goes wrong to a log stored on your own computer. When you are signed in, a scrubbed copy of recent diagnostics is sent to us automatically so we can find and fix problems. This is on by default and you can turn it off any time in Account settings.
What is sent: the type of error and where in the app it happened, the technical stack trace, the app version, your operating system and processor type, an anonymous installation identifier, your account and current project identifiers (when signed in), and a timestamp.
What is never sent: no part of your manuscript, reference files, style files, chat, or any of your writing. Before anything is recorded or sent it is scrubbed of file contents, file paths, web addresses, security tokens, and internal service names. You can view the exact scrubbed contents in the app before sending a report to support.
Local mode stays local. If you use Copperas without an account or while signed out, diagnostics are kept only on your computer and nothing is transmitted.
Basis and retention. We rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the app reliable and secure (see “Lawful Bases”). Server-side diagnostics are deleted after 90 days; the local log is small and is cleared after 30 days. If you have turned automatic reporting off and the app hits an error, it may ask you once whether to send that one report.
We use trusted service providers to operate Copperas, under contracts that limit their use of your data to providing services to us:
Our cloud service runs on infrastructure located in the United States. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to access, correct, delete, export (data portability), restrict, and object to processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You can update your email and password and delete your account and all associated cloud data from within the app (Account settings). For anything else, contact privacy@copperas.io. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
Your manuscript, version history, todo notes, and the local diagnostic log remain on your device and are not transmitted unless a feature you use (AI sessions, Cloud Backup, or signed-in diagnostics) requires it. You are responsible for the content you write, including any personal information about other people; avoid placing sensitive details you would not want stored into reference or style files.
We protect your data with encryption in transit and at rest, authenticated access, and access controls on our systems. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit what we collect in the first place.
Copperas is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
If we make material changes we will notify you at the email associated with your account, and the current version is always available in the app and at copperas.io/app-privacy.
